The Publix Index measures proximity to the nearest Publix with additional credit for having several stores nearby. Scores range from 0–100 because science demanded it.
How the score is built. 75% of the score is proximity: a building right next to a Publix gets full marks, the credit halves at about 1 km (0.6 miles) and reaches zero at 5 miles (8 km). The remaining 25% is density: how many Publix stores sit within 2 miles, saturating at four — a backup store is worth something when the deli line is long.
What we measure. All distances are straight-line ("as the crow flies") from the building's coordinates to the store's front door. They are not walking, driving or boating distances, and water in between does not count against you. Store locations and coordinates come from Publix's own store locator and are refreshed by hand when a store opens or closes.
