Work on Citadel's headquarters site at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive stopped after a piling rig toppled onto the street on September 14, 2026, injuring four people. Miami-Dade County issued a stop-work order for the whole site until the contractor filed an approved safety plan, Bisnow reported. The county approved a revised plan from the contractor, Keller North America, on October 7, and work resumed the following week, The Real Deal reported on October 16, citing the Miami Herald. The plan adds crane mats, spotters, flaggers and notices to nearby residents. OSHA's investigation remains open.

What happened

The rig was preparing the foundation with deep soil mixing when it fell across Brickell Bay Drive near SE 12th Street at about 8 a.m. It crushed vehicles, a car caught fire, and firefighters cut open a construction container to free two trapped workers, according to NBC Miami and Local 10. The rig operator, two other workers and a driver were taken to hospitals with injuries officials described as minor. A Miami-Dade deputy building official told the Miami Herald he believes the rig fell because it was moved in wet weather on soggy, unstable ground; OSHA has not released findings.

It was the second construction scare in Brickell in about six weeks. In early August 2026 a crane arm being assembled on an adjacent site fell onto the pool deck of the One Plaza West Brickell condominium; no injuries were reported, according to NBC Miami and Fox News.

The project behind the fence

Bisnow describes the site as Citadel's planned $2.5 billion headquarters, with about 1.7 million square feet of offices and plans for a residential tower of about 300 units, a garage and possibly a hotel. Vertical construction had been expected to begin by the end of 2026, Bisnow reported; no new schedule has been announced since work resumed.

What it means for owners and buyers

A large office project brings years of noise, lane closures and crane work, and the end product changes views and street life for the buildings around it. If you are buying on this stretch of Brickell, ask which side of the building the unit faces, check the association's minutes for anything on the project or construction damage, and look at how the building's recent sales compare with the neighborhood before you price an offer.
